The Coastal Jazz Association Presents
Jazz - Just Across the River !
Doug Carn’s "New Edition"
Sunday, May 20th – 5:00 p.m.
Westin in Savannah
Jazz Critic, Leonard Feather, stated in his "Encyclopedia of Jazz," "Doug Carn was destined from birth to be a part of the world of music." It appears that his prediction reflected another talent other than Jazz critic ----clairvoyant. Doug's accomplishments in the Jazz world are numerous. Although his main "axes" are piano and organ, he is a multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist, who sings, composes, arranges and plays several instruments which include woodwinds, trumpet and steel drums.
Doug's performing and recording experience includes a "Who's Who" list of some of the best artists in Jazz, such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Hank Crawford, Charlie Rouse, Junior Cook, Nat Adderly, Houston Person, Marlena Shaw, Frank Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Henderson, Fred Wesley, Javon Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Vincent Herring, Benny Golson, Cindy Blackman, Kenny Garrett, Joey DeFrancessco and many others too extensive to name at this time. His legendary stint with former wife, Jean Carn, is unforgettable. Doug is currently performing with Wallace Roney and his "Bitches Brew and Beyond Band."
The "New Edition Band primarily features Carn's original compositions and lyric versions of contemporary Jazz standards written by modern African American composers. Some of these creations are very new and haven't been heard before by the general public. Riding on a wave of new energy from last summer's European tous with Wallace Roney, Benny Maupin, Buster Williams and Al Foster, Doug brings a fresh innovation to his personal style and showcases the talents of Ray Callendar on trumpet, Mercedes Beckman on alto sax, flute and bass clarinet, Rob Whiting on guitar, Javier Mohica on bass and John Lumpkin on drums. Doug plays mostly piano and does some vocals.
If you are a person who has an appreciation for Jazz, you should not miss this concert. If you are a real Jazz fan, not only will you tell someone about it, you will bring someone with you. (Cost to general public: $10 - Free for CJA members)
